Monkland Cheese – The Other Monk
The Other Monk ended up with this name because it was the ‘other one’ Monkland were developing at the same time as the Blue Monk and the name just stuck. Made to a camembert style it is a rich, creamy, soft cheese with a white bloom. As the cheese matures it will ripen and soften gradually becoming softer and richer flavoured with time. I have to admit that I like it at all its different stages from just softening at the edges to gooey all the way through.
Monkland Cheese Dairy
This award winning artisan Dairy is located just down the road from us in Herefordshire and produces some of the finest local cheeses. If you’re ever in the area, take the opportunity to visit their excellent Tea Room – they even run tours of the Dairy and Cheese Experience Days where you can learn about the entire cheese-making process.
Monkland cheeses are made using raw milk (unpasteurized milk). Smaller-scale dairies are significantly more able to control the quality of raw-milk during the cheese-making process due to typically dealing with smaller heards of cows from one farm. The results are delicious, difficult to replicate local cheeses.
